SOS UK – Get Help and Be Safe in an Emergency
Use the app to be prepared and stay safe during an emergency with the app’s unique features, including (1) a one-touch SOS button that alerts your emergency contacts that you are in need of help; and (2) an emergency record that lets emergency responders quickly access your critical health information so that they can render prompt and effective care.

SOS UK is being evaluated as part of the NHS South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Test Bed programme
The Humetrix SOS UK app is being evaluated as part of NHS South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Test Bed programme, as described here. The aim of this programme is to bring substantial benefits for patients suffering from long term health conditions, such as diabetes, mental health problems, respiratory disease, hypertension and other chronic conditions. The SOS UK app is being evaluated as part of this initiative conducted under the direction of the Sheffield Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

SOS Button
The SOS button lets you quickly communicate with your emergency contacts.. This button appears on the home screen after you have listed your emergency contacts in the app. When the SOS button is tapped it waits three seconds before sending out the alerts, in case you decide to cancel the SOS. After the three-second delay, the SOS button will automatically: (1) dial your designated primary emergency contact; (2) send editable text messages to all of your designated emergency contacts with the GPS location of the emergency.

OK Button
The OK button lets your emergency contacts know you are ok and is available. If your situation changes and you no longer need help, just tap the OK button below the SOS button on the home screen and your emergency contacts will be updated that you are ok. This button can also be used independently of the SOS button. For example, you can alert your contacts that you are ok in a disaster scenario without sending an SOS message ahead of time.

Emergency Records
The app allows you to easily create emergency records with easy entry of emergency medical and contact information for you and your loved ones.

Creating an Emergency Record
When you launch SOS UK for the first time, you are prompted to create a profile. Give the new Profile a name that you can easily remember (e.g., the person’s first name), and add a picture of that person from your photo album or take a new photo. Adding a picture is highly recommended as it allows first responders in an emergency to identify the Profile holder.

The app next presents categories-of-information used to create your emergency record including: Personal Details, Emergency Contacts, Authorized Representative, Primary Physician, Insurance Details, Allergies, Immunizations, Medical Conditions, Medications, and Implanted Devices. Tap any of these category buttons to enter pertinent information for your emergency record. You may leave category fields blank if they are not relevant to you. You should include any vital information in an emergency situation like a life threatening allergy so that emergency medical personnel will know about it. Also, it is very important to fill out the Emergency Contacts section with the name and contact information of the person(s) you want to be directly alerted in case of an emergency (see “SOS Button” and “Email Auto-Alerts”). You can add as many emergency contacts as you like for a given Profile.

Once you’ve entered the information you want to be included in your emergency record profile, tap the “Publish Profile” button to send your new emergency record to the secure Humetrix SOS UK server so that it will be accessible in an emergency. Once published, you can view your new emergency record by tapping the QR code image on the “Congratulations” screen.

You can add as many profiles with emergency records to the app from the Profiles screen. Simply tap “Add New Profile” to add another Profile, and walk through the same steps described above. You can also edit an existing profile by tapping that profile from the Profiles screen. When you edit a profile, the app also lets you view the emergency record you have created and resave the QR code image for that profile (typically used to then save as the lock screen image- see below).

Using the App’s QR Code
Once an emergency record is created, the app generates a Quick Response (QR) code unique to the created profile and also a four-digit numerical code to unlock access to the individual record. The combination of the individual QR code and the four-digit numerical code is used by our secure server to prevent automated web-crawlers from accessing records. IMPORTANT: Note that individual QR codes will remain unchanged when the emergency record is edited. The QR code can be saved on your phone’s lock screen or printed as a wallet card.

In an emergency situation, medical personnel or attending bystanders scanning the app’s QR code with any QR scanner will quickly learn of any medical conditions, drug allergies, and other pertinent medical information.

Choosing what information to share
Within the personal details, emergency contacts, authorized representative and insurance sections of the app, you can use a privacy setting to restrict personally identifiable information from being shown to others on their device when the App QR code is scanned. The masked information will still be shown in the local SOS UK record within your app on your own device.

Email Auto-Alerts
At the time the QR code is scanned, the app automatically generates an email Auto-Alert to your listed emergency contacts, letting them know of the name of the person involved in the emergency and a map with the location of the emergency. Therefore, it is very important to complete all of the details of an emergency contact, including that contact’s email address and phone number(s).
